PPDA Explained: How Pressing Intensity Predicts Goal Markets

PPDA — passes per defensive action — is the metric that quietly changed how I bet football, and it’s still under-used by most UK punters even though the underlying data has been publicly available for years. The metric measures how many passes a team allows their opponent in the opponent’s defensive third before the team attempts a defensive action (tackle, interception, foul). Lower PPDA means more aggressive pressing; higher PPDA means more passive defending. The Championship hit 1,438 goals across 552 matches in the 2025/26 season — an average of 2.61 per fixture — and the variance in those goal totals tracks closely against the pressing-intensity profiles of the participating teams.
What follows is the practical application of PPDA to betting markets. The metric itself is well-documented in the tactical literature. What gets less attention is how to translate the analytical insight into actual betting positions.
What PPDA Actually Measures
The PPDA calculation is straightforward. Take all the passes a team’s opponents complete in the team’s defending third over a match. Divide by the total defensive actions (tackles, interceptions, fouls) the team attempts in that same third. The resulting number is the average passes per defensive action — a team with PPDA of 8.0 attempts a defensive action every 8 passes, a team with PPDA of 12.0 every 12 passes.

Lower PPDA means more aggressive, higher-intensity pressing. A team consistently producing PPDA in the 7-9 range is pressing high and forcing turnovers in their opponent’s half. A team in the 12-14 range is sitting deeper and accepting the opponent’s possession build-up. Premier League team PPDAs typically range from around 7.5 (the most aggressive pressers) to around 14 (the most passive defenders).
The metric has limitations. It doesn’t capture press intensity in the team’s own defending third (it’s specifically about the attacking-third pressing). It doesn’t capture the quality of the defensive actions, only their frequency. It’s affected by ball-possession share — teams that have less possession have more opportunities to press, which can artificially lower their PPDA without the underlying tactic being more aggressive.
The mitigations are well-understood. Possession-adjusted PPDA controls for the possession-share effect, and most modern analyst dashboards present both raw and adjusted versions. For betting purposes, the adjusted version is the more useful one because it isolates the tactical choice from the resulting possession dynamic.
Pressing Intensity and Total Goals
The single cleanest betting application of PPDA is on the goal-totals markets. Teams with aggressive pressing styles structurally produce higher-scoring matches because the pressing system creates turnovers in dangerous areas — which leads to both more shots for the pressing side and more transitional defensive vulnerabilities when the press is broken.

Two heavy-press teams playing each other typically produce matches with combined PPDA below 8.5 on the day, and these matches average noticeably higher goal totals than the season averages would predict. The over 2.5 market on these fixtures has consistent value across an EPL season — particularly when both teams are in the middle of a press-heavy tactical period rather than reverting to a more conservative setup.
The opposite case — two passive defenders playing each other — produces matches with low pressing intensity and structurally lower goal totals. The under 2.5 market is value here. The clearest examples each season are matches between two mid-table sides who both defend deep and counter rarely.
The mixed case — one aggressive presser versus one passive defender — is where the simple “average PPDA” reasoning breaks down. The pressing side gets their press broken less often (because the opponent doesn’t build patiently from the back), but when the press is broken, the transitional space is larger. The over/under prediction depends on which dynamic dominates, and the cleanest way to read it is by looking at recent matches between teams with similar profiles.
Counter-Attacking Opponents and the PPDA Trap
The trap to avoid is assuming aggressive pressing is always conducive to scoring. Against teams with strong counter-attacking transitions, aggressive pressing can create disastrous defensive vulnerabilities. The pressing team commits players high up the pitch; the opponent breaks the press with one pass; the resulting transition leaves the pressing side outnumbered at the back.

This dynamic shows up in specific match-ups. A press-heavy mid-table side playing a counter-strong top-six side is at structural risk — the top-six side has the technical quality to break the press and the pace to exploit the resulting space. The pressing side’s expected goals-conceded in these fixtures runs well above their season average, even though the pressing intensity is the same as in any other match.
The betting implication: when a press-heavy side travels to a counter-strong opponent, BTTS-yes and over 2.5 totals become structurally attractive plays. The press creates scoring chances at both ends — the pressing side generates chances in the opponent’s half, the counter-attacking side generates chances in the transitions. The combined goal expectation runs well above what either side’s season average alone would suggest.
The pattern reverses when a counter-strong side hosts a passive opponent. Without the pressing to break, the counter-attacking side has fewer transitional opportunities, the opponent has time to organise defensively, and the match becomes structurally lower-scoring than the counter-attacking side’s reputation might suggest.
Manager Tenure and PPDA Stability
One of the recurring data points in PPDA analysis is how dramatically a team’s pressing profile shifts with managerial change. A side under one manager might average a PPDA of 8.5; the same squad under a new manager three months later might be at 12.0 with no significant personnel changes. The change isn’t about the players — it’s about tactical instructions.

The market is sometimes slow to price these tactical shifts. The bookmaker’s model works from rolling averages that take weeks to fully update, and the per-fixture pricing during a tactical transition can lag behind the actual on-pitch reality. If a team’s PPDA has shifted by three points or more in the last six matches following a managerial change, the goal-totals pricing on their fixtures may still reflect the old style for two or three more matches.
The application is most useful at the start of a new manager’s tenure, when the public market hasn’t yet fully calibrated to the new tactical setup. The first three or four matches under a new manager are the highest-value window for betting against the lagged market pricing.
The stability check matters as well. Some managerial appointments produce sustained PPDA shifts that hold for a full season. Others produce a brief shift followed by reversion to the previous style as the squad’s underlying preferences reassert themselves. Distinguishing between these cases requires patient observation across the early matches of the new tenure.
Where to Find PPDA Data and How to Apply It
The PPDA data is now widely available across public-facing analytics sites for the Premier League and the Championship. Wyscout, FBref, Understat, and a handful of others publish team-level PPDA figures updated through each gameweek. The data is reasonable in quality, although the underlying event data sources differ across providers, so cross-checking between two sources is sensible for any specific number you plan to bet on.

The lower-league data is thinner. League One PPDA is available from professional providers but spotty in public sources, and League Two coverage is minimal. For lower-tier applications, the metric is harder to use directly, and proxies (shots-allowed per match, shots-on-target-allowed per match) become more practical.
The application I recommend for working punters: maintain a rolling six-match PPDA for each EPL team, updated after each gameweek. Track the league median (typically around 10.5). Tag teams as “aggressive press” (PPDA below 8.5), “balanced” (8.5-12), or “passive defenders” (above 12). Use these tags to inform totals-market bets on each upcoming fixture, especially when the two participating teams sit in the same or extreme tags.
The metric isn’t a magic bullet. The edge from incorporating PPDA into your read is modest — maybe one to two percent of additional ROI per year if applied disciplined to totals markets — but it’s persistent because the public market doesn’t always fully price the underlying pressing-intensity dynamics. Compounded over a season, two percent ROI is meaningful.
